Top 5 UK holiday destinations.

Those of us that live here often forget what a remarkable country we actually live in. Steeped in centuries of history, the UK remains one of the world’s greatest holiday destinations. Thousands of people come to these shores every year either to work, stay or visit our green and pleasant lands. There are simply hundreds of attractions that we as natives take for granted, of course there’s no Mt Rushmore or the Grand Canyon, but as a nation we still have lots to offer.

If you are thinking about visiting god’s country this year perhaps the first thing you need to think about is travel costs. Do not, and I repeat do not travel by rail in the UK. The rail system in this country is abysmal, overpriced and cramped; you’d get better and cheaper seats on an electric powered wheelie bin than you would on a train in Great Britain, it would probably get you there faster as well. Probably the best option for travel is to rent a car. Most airports have car rental booths and you can pick up some very cheap car hire at Heathrow airport or Gatwick when you arrive. Once you’ve got some wheels and your camping equipment sorted it’s time to choose your location.

Stonehenge

One of the most iconic and historical sites in Great Britain is of course Stonehenge located in Wiltshire. It truly is one of the great wonders of the world. The stone circle was erected around 3100BC on top of a dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments. The henge itself went through 3 phases of construction and the site remains a significant to modern day pagans and druids. Although access to the site is limited there are regular tours and remains open to the public during the yearly equinoxes.

Lake District

The Lake District is England’s largest National Park and is situated in the northwest corner of England in Cumbria. More than 8 million people visit the parks stunning scenery every year. The park has an area of over 885 square miles and contains some of England’s highest peaks and the countries largest natural lake, Lake Windermere. The Lake District is rich in heritage and contains a diverse collection of wildlife; it’s the ideal location for a summer camping escapade.

London

No real visit to the UK is complete without at least a quick trip to Londinium. Some might call it dirty and cramped, but let’s face it there are lots of things to do and see. I could write a whole page about places to visit in London, but I’m not going to, I’ll just mention a select few such as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St Pauls Cathedral, Camden Market, Covent Gardens, Soho, Hyde Park…. The list is endless. London has a vibrant and multicultural nightlife with hundreds of sites and attractions for the whole family.

Scottish Highlands

The Highlands are one of Britain’s best kept secrets. The Highlands consist of hundreds of acres of untouched wild moorlands, mountain ranges, lakes and lochs. The area is abundant with majestic rugged scenery, beautiful glens and contains hundred of unique sites steeped in history.

Bath

Bath remains one of England’s most historically intact cities. The city contains architecture from several centuries including Georgian terraces and of course the Roman Baths. The baths themselves provide a unique perspective into Roman occupied Britain. Built in AD 60 by the Emperor Claudius, the baths remain one of the most intact Roman architectural sites in Europe.

[...] Of course the majority of Brits are tarred with this same brush. Most people I know try to avoid the tourist traps and attempt to go native by fully integrating themselves with foreign customs and the language when on vacation. This summer reports indicate that most UK households will vacation at home instead of heading abroad due to economic constraints and the poor performance of the Pound versus the Euro. Further reports suggest that staycation packages and UK car hire sales have increased massively ahead of the summer holiday period. For those of you planning a staycation take a look at our post on the top 5 UK holiday destinations. [...]
