Although the summer vacation season is coming to a close there’s still time to get in that last minute vacation. This time of year is often a great for grabbing those last minute off-peak deals. So if you happen to have a few spare weeks holiday left over and a few hundred pounds to burn then you may want to think about getting a well earned rest before the winter weather descends and the run-up to Christmas begins. Choosing a location for your holiday can often be the hardest thing to decide, so we thought we’d eliminate some possibilities and come up with our 3 top last minute destinations.
Rome
Ahh the beautiful and magical city of Rome, home of the Colosseum, Trajan’s Column and the Pantheon. There’s not a great deal that you really need to say about the city of Rome when it comes to choosing it for a holiday destination, the city is packed with magnificent architecture and historical sites with lots to see and do. The monuments are so many and the views are so grand that one can often become immune to stunning displays of history. Probably one of the best things I can suggest is to organise which sites you want to visit before you arrive, organise a few tours for 2-3 days and then after you’ve done that get the hell out of dodge (as they say). It’s easy to get desensitised by the grandeur of Rome so spending a few days away from the city will help you appreciate the sites more when you return. If you get the chance grab some car hire in Rome and then head out north towards Perugia or head out east into the Sabine Mountains. If you get the chance head to Tuscany it’s a truly beautiful part of the country.
Crete
Crete has a long and glorious history, the island was once home to the Minoan civilisation, one of the earliest cultures to be based in the Mediterranean Sea. The island, which is the 5th biggest Greek island, was later occupied by the Romans, the Byzantium Empire and various other Mediterranean cultures. Over 2 million tourists visit Crete each year and the island is one of the most popular destinations in all of Greece. The island is well known for its music, its unique culture and Cretan wine. One of the best ways to get around the island is by car, so arrange some car hire in Crete and then head off across the island. There is a whole host of historical sites that you can visit these include the ancient ruins of Gournia in Heraklion, the palace of Knossos, the palace of Festos and a 16th century Venetian fort in Rethymnon which combines both Moorish and medieval European architecture.
Corfu
Corfu is one of the hottest destinations in the Mediterranean, the island has long been known as one of Greece’s hippest and coolest party locations. The island is also rich in history and beauty, legend has it that island was named after the nymph Korkyra who was abducted to the island by the god Poseidon. Corfu is second largest of the Ionian Islands and again the best way to get around the island is by car, so before you arrive arrange some car hire from Corfu airport and then head out across the island. Unfortunately some of Corfu’s most impressive monuments were damaged by the Luftwaffe during WW2, but despite that there are still some great locations to visit. Some of the most famous attractions include Kassiopi an ancient village dating back to Roman times, Sissi’s palace and Zoodochos Pigi a medieval monastery.
