The Rise of the Eco-Car…

Going on holiday this year?…

Off to sunny Spain or maybe your feeling adventurous, perhaps a road trip across the states, east coast to west coast with the obligatory sight seeing trip to the Grand Canyon. Ever since I watched Easy Rider at the age of about 16 I have dreamed about flying into Washington DC and hitting the road. Cruising across the green state of Virginia and driving off towards the fabled land of California. Having been a lifelong activist and participator in the green movement I find the whole idea of a road trip in direct contradiction with my environmental ethos. Especially when you’re final destination is supposedly the most green Eco-friendly state in the whole of the US. Climate change is evident, some of it is natural, but lets face it most of it is probably caused by human interference. I personally feel that it is up to the current generation to really pull its finger out and start preserving what we have left. But, does that mean that we have to give up some of those great things that are ancestors got to do?

So what’s the plan?…

You want to head out on a road trip across the states, probably the most iconic vacation known to man, but you don’t want to screw Mother Nature on the way. The simple solution is to make sure you hire an Eco car. In recent years the bio-fuel and Eco car industries have grown dramatically. Due to its huge automobile industry the United States has become the world’s leading proponent of bio-fuels. Certain states like Missouri and Minnesota require that every gallon of gasoline sold must be blended with at least 10% ethanol. In 2008 the US government opened its first “bio-fuel corridor” along I-65 which included over 200 pumping stations providing bio-fuels. This allows Eco and ethanol powered cars to drive all the way from Lake Michigan to the gulf of New Mexico.

Captain America’s Eco road trip…

So the misnomer of an Eco friendly road trip no longer appears to be such a crazy futuristic idea. In fact a quick Google search provides lots of examples of people who achieved just that. In 2004 a group of students and a veggie oil bus traversed 15,000 miles in an attempt to show just how feasible a true Eco road trip was. Recently Enterprise Rent-A-Car announced that it was adding 5,000 hybrid cars to its fleet making it the world’s biggest Eco car rental company with over 80 ‘hybrid stations’ across the states. But what about the Easy Rider dream? Well even that’s possible nowadays with Eco-bikes, not as cool as your regular vintage Harley, but at least the dream is still alive and now you can do it without ruining your Eco conscience.

So in the words of Captain America “No, I mean it, you’ve got a nice place. It’s not every man that can live off the land, you know. You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud.”

One Comment to “The Rise of the Eco-Car…”

Hey Mister I was searching for eco car on the web and found this.

I used Enterprise in the summer when I helped my brother move home and they hit me with heavy charges for repairing a big scratch. If they were sooo right on they wouldn’t squander resources on minor repairs and I would be a lot better off.
