Every year in February hundreds of men wander around shops with a slightly jarred haunted look in their eyes. They know that if they don’t perform well, if they don’t pull it out of the bag as it were, then they are in trouble, deep trouble – the kind of immense, complicated trouble that you can only associate with a member of the opposite sex.
Yes Valentine’s Day is coming. The shops are gearing up and spreading nauseating amounts of heart-shaped objects everywhere. Right now florists are jumping up and down, waiting for hordes of lovers to cross their palms with silver. Whether it’s a single red rose, a dozen, or even a whole bouquet of flowers, the florist will always give you that sympathetic and slightly amused look when you mumble something about ‘flowers for the Mrs’. Others become a bit more daring and go for lingerie, but to be quite frank, unless your partner shares your tastes, buying lingerie can be more hassle than its worth, especially if you don’t get the size right. Personally I think the idea is just a bit cheesy and pants anyway.
Although most people mutter and grumble about Valentines, it’s still nice to go out there and do something for a friend or a partner. So without further ado here are a few suggestions on how you can make someone’s day on the 14th.
No matter what anyone says, the old ones are still the best. Take my word on it. Without a shred of doubt every girl likes flowers. You will be surprised by how many girls have never actually been given flowers, so to make a real impact send her a bunch of Valentine flowers and you’ll already be off to a winner before the days even begun.
The next one is a bit trickier because it all comes down to taste. Buying jewellery for women is not always easy, often you have to put aside your natural revulsion for one piece and go for it because you know it’s her kind of style. As a rule of thumb I tend to stick with silver and the simpler the better, something chic and elegant always goes well, especially if you’re going to wrap up the night with a meal, which leads me to the piste de resistance: Dinner.
Always book early, never, ever, ever leave it till late to arrange your night out. Always choose a nice restaurant, you have to go all out I’m afraid – don’t break the bank going to a 5star if you can’t afford it, but make it nice, somewhere different, or a place she either likes or has always wanted to go to.
And that’s it, simple but effective…
