Car Hire Spain – Drive from Malaga to Ronda
If you’re spending your holiday in Malaga, you can take a break from the beaches of the Costa del Sol by hiring a car and heading for the historic town of Ronda. There are all sorts of ways to book cheap car hire in Spain. Probably the best option is to skim the net and look for any available offers. The recession is currently affecting both the automotive and the holiday industry and a lot of companies have been forced to offer attractive competitive offers so now is a good time to hire. It will only take you about an hour and a half to drive to Ronda from Malaga in your hire car, so it’s the perfect destination for a day-trip.
Car Hire Malaga – Getting to Ronda from Malaga
Once you’ve picked up your cheap car hire in Malaga head out on the E-15/AP-7 toll road, following the signs for Algeciras. Take exit 172 to get onto the A-397 partial toll road. Turn right to get onto the A-397/Ctra de Ronda and take the fourth exit at the roundabout to get onto the A-376/Ctra de Ronda. Bear left to get onto the A-397, following the signs for Ronda and continue along this road for about 43km. Take the second exit at the roundabout in order to get onto the A-369 and go straight on at the next roundabout. Take the second exit at the next roundabout to get onto Calle Imágenes and continue straight on along Calle de Armiñán. This will take you to Ronda.
Attractions in Ronda
Ronda is one of Spain’s oldest towns and is a beautiful place to explore as part of a Malaga car hire holiday. The Rio Guadalevín runs through the centre of the town via the El Tajo Gorge, and one of the town’s key historical attractions is the New Bridge (Puente Nuevo), which crosses the gorge. The 98m tall bridge, which was completed in 1793, links the Old Town area of Ronda with the New Town area. If you park your rental car and walk across the New Bridge, you’ll be able to enjoy the spectacular views of the Serranía de Ronda Mountains, and there is also an Interpretation Centre within the bridge.
Ronda is also home to one of the oldest bullfighting rings in the country. The bullring was opened in 1785 and was constructed from sandstone. One of the most famous bullfighters to have performed here was Pedro Romero (1754-1839), who was born and died in Ronda. Said to have killed more than 6,000 bulls during his career without ever having been injured, Romero was also the subject of a portrait by Goya. Bullfights are still held at the Ronda Bullring during an annual festival, the Feria Goyesco, and the building also contains the town’s Bullfighting Museum, where you can see paintings, documents and bullfighters’ costumes.
Other attractions in Ronda include the remains of the town’s Arab Baths, the 18th century House of the Moorish King and its beautiful, tranquil gardens, and the Mondragon Palace, which is known for its water gardens and which is also home to a museum featuring exhibits relating to the history of Ronda and the surrounding area.
Ronda also has some excellent restaurants and bars, and you can browse in its antiques stores or stroll through the Alameda del Tajo, Ronda’s main gardens, which date from the 19th century.
