Bed-tastic inventions

There are many revolutions and inventions that have undeniably changed the world forever. Advancements in science and technology have allowed mankind to evolve from a tribal Neanderthal state into the remarkable civilization we now have. Inventions like the wheel, concrete and electricity have transformed the world as we know it. These creations have allowed man to expand and explore, and continue to allow us to progress as a species.

But not all the greatest inventions have been so revolutionary. Some of mankind’s littlest achievements are perhaps the best. The cup for example is not a complicated design, it doesn’t require large amounts of technical construction, its brilliance is its simplicity without it we would probably never have left the caves of ignorance. As Lennon said, imagine a world without any cups? It’s not easy. You can then take it to the next level and imagine a world without any coffee, personally I don’t think I could handle that, I need at least 4 cups a day. When you break it down coffee is a pretty simple innovation. At some point some native guy ground down a few beans and added a bit of water, you don’t have to be Einstein to do it, sometimes it just takes a bit of luck and a willingness to try new things. For instance take the guy who invented dynamite. Alfred Nobel spent a lot of time messing around with nitro-glycerine which was extremely unstable as no-one had worked out a way of stabilising it. Urban legend says that during one of his experiments, Nobel dropped a beaker of nitro-glycerine into a box of clay, instead of blowing him to kingdom-come, Nobel realised that the clay actually stabilised the nitro-glycerine, this paste could then be worked upon and transported.

Like I said before my digression not every invention has to be a remarkable or revolutionary creation. Invention often comes through intuition, nature and observation. Personally, alongside the cup of course, I think that one of the greatest inventions of all time has to be the double bed and the pillow. Where would mankind be without the pillow? Well for starters we’d all have cricked necks and without beds we’d all have to sleep on the floor and society as a whole would be a lot crankier. If we didn’t have beds wars would probably be caused by lack of sleep, rather than the pursuit of oil or regime change. It’s truly amazing how such simple inventions can revolutionise the world.
